Old French may have borrowed its wordsalade from Old Provençal. Medieval Latin also carried on the Vulgar Latin word in the formsalāta. As in the case of so many culinary delights, the English borrowed the word and probably the dish from the French. The Middle English wordsalade, from Old French salade and Medieval Latin salāta, is first recorded in a recipe book composed before 1399. 来自于古法语的Salade 及中世纪拉丁语 salāta 的中世纪英语中的 salade 一词被记载于1399年以前编的一本菜谱里 〔junk〕Portuguese junco 葡萄牙语 junco 〔jackfruit〕Portuguese jaca from Malayalam cakkai 葡萄牙语 jaca 源自 马拉亚拉姆方言 cakkai 〔crusado〕Portuguese [from past participle of] cruzar [to mark with a cross] 葡萄牙语 源自cruzar的过去分词 [在…上刻十字架] 〔albinism〕from Portuguese * see albino 源自 葡萄牙语 * 参见 albino〔serval〕from Portuguese (lobo) cerval [deerlike (wolf), lynx] 源自 葡萄牙语 (lobo) cerval [象鹿的(狼),山猫] 〔cabretta〕Portuguese cabra [she-goat] both from Latin capra [feminine of] caper [goat] 葡萄牙语 cabra [母山羊] 都源自 拉丁语 capra caper的阴性词 [山羊] 〔teak〕Portuguese teca 葡萄牙语 teca 〔buffalo〕The buffalo is so closely associated with the Wild West that it would seem natural to assume that its name comes from a Native American word, as is the case with the wordsmoose and skunk. In fact, however, buffalo can probably be traced back by way of one or more of the Romance languages, such as Portuguese, Spanish, or Italian, through Vulgar Latin and Latin and ultimately to the Greek wordboubalos, meaning "an antelope or a buffalo.” The buffalo referred to by the Greek and Latin words was, of course, not the American one but rather an Old World mammal, such as the water buffalo of southern Asia.Applied to the North American mammal, buffalo is in fact a misnomer, bison being the preferred term. As far as everyday usage is concerned, however, buffalo, first recorded for the American mammal in 1635, is older thanbison, first recorded in 1774. 然而就日常用法而言,buffalo 于1635年首次被用于记录美国哺乳动物, 比首次记录于1774年的bison 要早些 〔mangrove〕Probably Portuguese mangue from Taino 可能为 葡萄牙语 mangue 源自 泰诺语 〔roble〕Portuguese [oak] 葡萄牙语 [橡树] 〔Negro〕Portuguese negro [black, Black person] 葡萄牙语 negro [黑种人,黑人] 〔genipap〕Portuguese genipapo 葡萄牙语 genipapo 〔ipecac〕Short for Portuguese ipecacuanha 葡萄牙语 ipecacuanha的简写 〔ayah〕from Portuguese aia [nursemaid] 源自 葡萄牙语 aia [保姆] 〔buffalo〕or Portuguese 或 葡萄牙语 〔marabout〕from Portuguese marabuto 源自 葡萄牙语 marabuto 〔Portuguese〕Portuguese português 葡萄牙语 português 〔lacquer〕from Portuguese 源自 葡萄牙语 |
