释义 〔groundless〕Having no ground or foundation; unsubstantiated:毫无根据的:没有根据或基础的;缺乏根据的:〔enthusiasm〕When the English philospher Henry More stated in a work published in 1660 that "If ever Christianity be exterminated, it will be by Enthusiasme,”he clearly used the word differently from the way we do now.He was also using a meaning that differed from the first sense, "possession by a god,” recorded in English (1603). Enthusiasm and this sense of the word go back to the Greek wordenthousiasmos, which ultimately comes from the adjectiveentheos, "having the god within,” formed fromen-, "in, within,” and theos, "god.” Henry More in 1660 was referring to belief, either mistaken or unsupported by evidence, in one's own inspiration by the Christian God. Enthusiasm, as now most frequently used, has become secularized and at times weakened,so that one can speak of an enthusiasm for fast cars. Enthusiasm 现在被经常使用,它的含义已脱离宗教的影响并不断弱化,现在我们可以说对开快车的狂热〔nihilism〕A doctrine holding that all values are baseless and that nothing can be known or communicated.虚无主义学说:认为一切价值观念都毫无根据且一切都是不可知或不可交流的一种学说〔transpire〕Transpire has been used since the mid-18th century in the sense "leak out, become publicly known,” as inDespite efforts to hush the matter up, it soon transpired that the colonels had met with the rebel leaders. This usage was objected to as a Gallicism when it was first introducedbut has long been standard. The more common use oftranspire to mean "occur" or "happen" has had a more troubled history.Though it dates at least to the beginning of the 19th century,it has been the object of critical opprobrium for more than a hundred years, charged with being both pretentious and unetymological. There is some signthat resistance to this sense oftranspire is abating, however. In a 1969 survey the usagewas acceptable only to 38 percent of the Usage Panel;in the most recent surveyit was acceptable to 58 percent in the sentenceAll of these events transpired after last week's announcement (though many of the Panelists who accepted the usage also remarked that it was pretentious or pompous).Transpire See Synonyms at baseless 毫无根据的乐观 参见 baseless〔insupportable〕an insupportable claim.
