The word is believed to have entered English in the 9th century through the work of the English king Alfred the Great. A scholar as well as a king, Alfred undertook a number of translations of great Latin writings, rendering them into the English of his time, now known as Old English.Among the works translated during Alfred's reign was a store of narratives and information about England's earliest connections with the Church, called theHistoria Ecclesiastica Gentis Anglorum, or The Ecclesiastical History of the English People, a work composed by the Venerable Bede. Several times in his book Bede uses the Latin phrasecolumna lucis, which we would today translate as "a column of light.”Since the Old English translator did not have the wordcolumn in his vocabulary, he substituted the word beam, which meant "a tree" or "a building post made from a tree.”Columna lucis thus became sunnebeām, or "sun post,” which survives as our sunbeam. Ifsunbeam is perhaps a less stately expression than "column of light,” it has nevertheless served us well. From it the wordbeam alone came to mean "a ray or rays of light"; it subsequently became a verb meaning "to radiate.”It now allows us not only to beam with pride or happinessbut also to beam our broadcasts to other countries and ourselves, as some would have it, through space.Column would never do. The Ecclesiastical History of the English People Column 可不行 〔tinsel〕To give a false sparkle to.粉饰:给…添加不真实的光彩〔nimbus〕A splendid atmosphere or aura, as of glamour, that surrounds a person or thing.气氛,光彩:围绕人或东西的气氛或氛围,如魅力〔lazulite〕A relatively rare blue mineral, (Mg, Fe)Al2(PO 4) 2(OH) 2, with a vitreous luster. 天蓝石:一种比较贵重的蓝色矿物,(Mg,Fe)Al2(PO 4) 2(OH) 2具有玻璃般的光彩 〔sparkler〕One, such as a highly polished metallic surface or a virtuoso performer, that sparkles.闪闪发光之物:焕发光彩的东西,如擦亮的或金属的表面或是一个技艺精湛的表演者〔lusterless〕Lacking distinction, radiance, or vitality; dull:缺乏名气、光彩、或活力的;乏味的:〔atmospheric〕a painting suffused with a hazy, atmospheric glow.图画显示着半透明的、艺术的光彩〔clothe〕trees clothed in leafy splendor;笼罩在光彩中的密叶丛生的树木;〔pearlized〕Having a pearlescent finish.如珍珠般闪亮的,有珍珠光彩〔grace〕You grace our table with your presence.你的到来使我们的台面增添了光彩〔gloss〕To give a bright sheen or luster to.使有光泽,光彩〔gilt〕Superficial brilliance or gloss.表面的光辉或光彩〔splendor〕Great light or luster; brilliance.光辉,光彩:强的光线或光彩;辉煌〔luster〕To give a gloss, glaze, or sheen to.给…增加光泽、釉或光彩〔flashy〕Giving a momentary or superficial impression of brilliance.闪烁的,炫耀的:给人以短暂或表面印象的光彩或才华的〔habit〕"His real habitude gave life and grace/To appertainings and to ornament" (Shakespeare).“他的习惯是增添生机和光彩/对那些附属物和装饰物” (莎士比亚)〔glorify〕To cause to be or seem more glorious or excellent than is actually the case:使增色,美化:使比原来情况处于或看起来更光彩或出色:
