单词 被混淆
释义 〔complement〕Complement and compliment, though quite distinct in meaning, are sometimes confused because they are pronounced the same. Complement means "something that completes or brings to perfection": Complement 和 compliment, 虽然在意义上截然不同, 但是因为它们发音相同所以时常被混淆。 Complement 意思是“补足或使…完美”: 〔principal〕Principal and principle are often confused but have no meanings in common. Principle is only a noun, and most of its senses refer to that which is basic or to rules and standards.Principal is both a noun and an adjective. As a noun (aside from its specialized meanings in law and finance)it generally denotes a person who holds a high position or plays an important role: Principal 和 principle 的意思完全不同,但常常被混淆。 Principle 仅仅是一个名词, 其主要意义指基本的东西或规则和标准。Principal 既是名词又是形容词。 作为名词(除了其在法律或财政金融上的特殊含义),它一般指居于高位或担任重要角色的人: 〔founder〕The verbsfounder and flounder are often confused. Founder comes from a Latin word meaning "bottom" (as infoundation ) and originally referred to knocking enemies down;it is now used as well to mean "to fail utterly, collapse.” Flounder means "to move clumsily, thrash about,”and hence "to proceed in confusion.”If John isfoundering in Chemistry 1, he had better drop the course; if he isfloundering, he may yet pull through. 动词founder 和 flounder 常被混淆。 Founder 从拉丁语演变而来, 意为“底部”(如在foundation 中), 原指将敌人打倒在地;现在亦指“完全失败,崩溃”。 Flounder 指“挣扎,踉跄”,并由此引申出“在困惑中进行”的意思。如果说约翰在化学1中失败, 他最好放弃这门功课; 如果他正在挣扎中, 他可能还能通过这门课 〔unexceptionable〕Unexceptional and unexceptionable are sometimes confused. Unexceptionable is derived from the word exception in the sense "objection,” as in the idiomtake exception. Thusunexceptionable means "not open to any objection,” as inA judge's ethical standards should be unexceptionable. Unexceptional, in contrast, is related to the common sense of exception and generally means "not exceptional, not varying from the usual,” as inSome judges' ethical standards have unfortunately been unexceptional. Unexceptional 与 unexceptionable 有时被混淆了。 Unexceptionable 是由词 exception 引出的,有“反对”的意思, 如在成语take exception。 而unexceptionable 表示“不会有任何反对,” 如在A judge's ethical standards should be unexceptionable.(法官的伦理标准应该是无懈可击的)。 Unexceptional,相比之下,是有关 exception 的一般意义,通常表示“无例外的,不从通常改变的," 如在Some judge's ethical standards have unfortunately been unexceptional.(某些法官的伦理标准不幸地是不容许有例外的) 〔lay〕Lay ("to put, place, or prepare") and lie ("to recline or be situated") are frequently confused. Lay is a transitive verb and takes an object. Lay and its principal parts ( laid, laying ) are correctly used in the following examples: Lay (“放、安置或准备”)和 lie (“躺下或位于”)两词经常被混淆。 Lay 是一及物动词,能接宾语。 在以下的例子中,lay 及它的分词形式( laid, laying )在下列句子中的用法是正确的:
