释义 〔website〕The transition fromWorld Wide Web site to Web site to website seems to have progressed as rapidly as the technology itself. The development of website as a single uncapitalized word mirrors the development of other technological expressions which have tended to evolve into unhyphenated forms as they become more familiar. Thus email has recently been gaining ground over the forms E-mail and e-mail, especially in texts that are more technologically oriented. Similarly, there has been an increasing preference for closed forms like homepage, online, and printout. 同样的,也有越来越喜欢采用封闭形态字型的趋势,例如 homepage(首页)、online(在线) 和 printout(印出) 〔mesmerism〕When the members of an audience sit mesmerized by a speaker, their reactions do not take the form of dancing, sleeping, or falling into convulsions. But if Franz Anton Mesmer were addressing the audience, such behavior could be expected.Mesmer, a visionary 18th-century physician, believed cures could be effected by having patients do thingssuch as sit with their feet in a fountain of magnetized waterwhile holding cables attached to magnetized trees.Mesmer then came to believe that magnetic powers resided in himself, and during highly fashionable curative sessions in Parishe caused his patients to have reactions ranging from sleeping or dancing to convulsions. These reactions were actually brought about by hypnotic powers that Mesmer was unaware he possessed. One of his pupils, named Puységur, then used the termmesmerism (first recorded in English in 1802) for Mesmer's practices. The related wordmesmerize (first recorded in English in 1829), having shed its reference to the hypnotic doctor, lives on in the sense "to enthrall.” 另一相关词汇mesmerize (在英语中始见于1829年)则摒弃了与这位催眠医师的关系, 现在这个词意是“迷惑住”〔wog〕Used as a disparaging term for a person of color, especially a foreigner from the Middle East or Asia.中东国家的人:用于对有色人的污蔑的字眼,尤指从中东或亚洲来的外国人〔challenged〕People who object to the termsdisabled and handicapped as being too negative sometimes propose the substitution of challenged instead, as in referring to persons with physical disabilities as physically challenged. While this particular phrase is quite popular, it is sometimes taken to be condescending, and similar usages such as mentally challenged have failed to win equal acceptance. Indeed, the widespread parody of challenged in such expressions as electronically challenged for "inept at using computers" has effectively eliminated it as an all-purpose alternative to disabled or handicapped. 事实上,广为流传的 challenged 谐谑用法如以 electronically challenged(计算机残障) 来形容计算机白痴,已使得其全面替代 disabled 或 handicapped 沦为梦想 〔wop〕Used as a disparaging term for an Italian.意大利人,意大利后裔:用作对于意大利人的蔑视的字眼〔concinnity〕"He has what one character calls ‘the gifts of concinnity and concision,’ that deft swipe with a phrase that can be so devastating in children"(Elizabeth Ward)“他具有那种被称为‘优美和简洁的天赋’的特点,这个对孩子震动巨大的字眼深深刺痛了他们”(伊丽莎白·沃德)
