On McKinley's assassination (September 1901), he assumed the presidency. Roosevelt's administration was marked by the regulation of trusts, the building of the Panama Canal, and a foreign policy based on the motto "Speak softly and carry a big stick.” He won the 1906 Nobel Peace Prize for his mediation in the Russo-Japanese War.罗斯福,狄奥多尔:(1858-1919) 美国第二十六任总统(1901-1909年),他是美西战争的中心人物,曾任纽约州州长(1899-1900年)并在威廉·麦金利被暗杀后(1901年9月)继任总统。他的政策以调节托拉斯集团、建筑巴拿马运河及对外奉行“说话和气,手持大棒”为显著特征。他因调停俄日战争而获1906年度诺贝尔和平奖〔Yukaghir〕A member of a traditionally nomadic people of eastern Siberia, known for their animistic beliefs and practice of shamanism.尤卡吉尔人:西伯利亚东部的传统游牧民族中一员,他们信仰万物有灵论并奉行萨满教〔stingy〕She practices economy without being stingy.她奉行一种的不吝啬的节俭方式。〔Halifax〕British public official who was viceroy of India (1926-1931) and foreign secretary (1938-1940), implemented Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain's policy of appeasement toward Nazi Germany, and served as ambassador to the United States (1941-1946).哈利法克斯:英国政府官员,1926-1931年曾任印度总督,1938-1940年及外交大臣,对纳粹德国奉行内维尔·张伯伦首相的绥靖政策,1941-1946年任驻美大使〔mediagenic〕"a minor leaguer of bumptious manner and mediagenic good looks"(Larry Martz)“一个次要的联盟成员,但却奉行傲慢自负,颇受新闻媒介的注意”(拉里·马茨)〔monk〕A man who is a member of a brotherhood living in a monastery and devoted to a discipline prescribed by his order:修道士:居住在修道院并奉行其戒律的男子:〔puritanical〕Rigorous in religious observance; marked by stern morality.在宗教奉行上作风严格的;以严格的道德观念为特点的〔formalize〕To give formal standing or endorsement to; make official or legitimate by the observance of proper procedure.使正式,使有效:给予正式的认同;通过奉行正常的手续使成为法定的或合法的〔be〕Traditional grammar requires the nominative form of the pronoun in the predicate of the verbbe : It is I (not me ); That must be they (not them ), and so forth. Even literate speakers of Modern English have found the rule difficult to conform to,but the stigmatization ofIt is me is by now so deeply lodged among the canons of correctness that there is little likelihood that the construction will ever be entirely acceptable in formal writing.Adherence to the traditional rule in informal speech, however, has come to sound increasingly pedantic, and begins to sound absurd when the verb is contracted, as inIt's we. · The traditional rule creates particular problems when the pronoun followingbe also functions as the object of a verb or preposition in a relative clause, as in It is not them/they that we have in mind when we talk about "crime in the streets" nowadays, where the plural pronoun serves as both the predicate ofis and the object of have. In this example, 57 percent of the Usage Panel preferred the nominative formthey, 33 percent preferred the accusativethem, and 10 percent accepted both versions. But H.W. Fowler, like other authorities, argued that the use of the nominative here is an error caused by "the temptation . . . to assume, perhaps from hearingIt is me corrected to It is I, that a subjective [nominative] case cannot be wrong after the verb to be. ” Writers can usually find a way to avoid this problem: They are not the ones we have in mind, We have someone else in mind, and so on. See Usage Note at I 1we 传统语法要求系动词谓语中的代词用主格形式be : It is I (而不是 me ); That must be they (而不是 them ),等等。 作家们常常能够找到一个办法来避免这个问题: 他们不是我们所想的人,我们脑子里想的是另一些人等等 参见 I1we〔usual〕Commonly encountered, experienced, or observed:通常的,平常的:经常碰到的、经历的或奉行的:〔Gorton〕Australian politician who as prime minister (1968-1971) pursued liberal reforms.戈顿,约翰·格雷:(生于 1911) 澳大利亚政治家,在1968-1971年期间任首相,奉行自由改革政策〔Protestantism〕Adherence to the religion and beliefs of a Protestant church.奉行新教教义:遵守新教教会的宗教和信仰〔Converso〕A Spanish or Portuguese Jew who converted outwardly to Christianity in the late Middle Ages so as to avoid persecution or expulsion, though often continuing to practice Judaism in secret.康法索:西班牙或葡萄牙的犹太人,他在中世纪时外在上改信基督教来逃避迫害或驱除,但仍常常秘密地在继续奉行犹太教〔Whig〕A 19th-century American political party formed to oppose the Democratic Party and favoring high tariffs and a loose interpretation of the Constitution.辉格党:19世纪为反对民主党而形成的一个美国的政党,奉行高关税政策,对宪法的阐释也较松散且不严谨
