〔Narbonne〕A city of southern France near the Mediterranean coast southwest of Montpellier. Thought to have been the first Roman colony established in Transalpine Gaul (118b.c. ), it was an important seaport until its harbor silted up in the 14th century. It is now the commercial center of a wine-growing region.
